How To Get a Job

February 16, 2015

Lately, my was full of job questions. After graduating for more than a year and changing jobs about 3 times, I decided why not I come up with a few tips to help fresh graduates to earn a job. Also, I participated in NUS Career Fair representing Luxola earlier last week.

Of course, this won't 100% guarantee that you will get a job but it will definitely help you. I was clueless when I first started. I only had with me what the school taught me which to be honest wasn't enough.
  1. Your resume should include only relevant experiences because you don't want to submit 5 pages of resume to a potential employer. They don't have all the time in the world to read every single thing. Narrow it down for them.
  2. Please don't expect a $3.5k as the starting pay. I'm sorry if you think a degree will get you to earn that much. You will earn that much, perhaps in the future but not now. Patience is important.
  3. Be sure what of what you want to do. If you have a degree that is not related to your job interest, it's fine. But you need to know and show the potential employer how passionate you are. Volunteer experiences help as well.
  4. I don't know why but I had a few people who came by our booth the other day and told us they would like to work in the company but they have no idea what role to apply. Some even asked what can they do. What do you want to/can do?
  5. During interviews, be yourself. Don't fake an accent and don't fake an interest.
  6. Be prepared to get rejected and if you do, move on. It probably means you can find something better. Don't beat yourself up and get so depressed over it!
That's all I have. Short entry but I hope you will find it useful. Good luck!
